and head of Tihar, Asia's largest prison

KIRAN BEDI is one of the most well-known and controversial officers to put on the uniform of the Indian Police Service. Ever since she became the very first woman in the IPS back in 1972, Bedi has been the one of the most high-profile police officers in Asia.

She has worked in various aspects of modern-day policing in India, including narcotics, traffic, VIP security, and most notably, as head of Tihar, Asia's largest prison system. While at Tihar, she worked to reform the conditions of the prisoners, especially its women.

She is currently on sabbatical as a Nehru Fellow to write about her experiences as a head of Tihar.

Kiran speaks as her sister and mother look on. She was on a US tour to raise money for her charity foundation.

Bedi was born in Amritsar, Punjab in 1949. She has a bachelor's in English from the Government College for Women in Amritsar, a master's in Political Science from Punjab University, a law degree from University of Delhi, and a doctorate in social sciences from the Indian Institute of Science, Delhi.

Incidentally, Bedi is a former all-India and all-Asian tennis champion, having won the Asian Ladies title at the age of 22.
