Hannah
Bloch was born in New York City and was educated at the University
of Pennsylvania and Columbia University. She studied Urdu in Lahore,
Pakistan, on a program run by the University of California/Berkeley.
She
started with TIME Magazine in 1991 as a science reporter in New
York City, later working as a general assignment reporter in TIME's
Washington bureau. In
1996, she was named the magazine's first fulltime correspondent
in Pakistan and covered Pakistan and Afghanistan until September
2002. Concurrent with her TIME assignment, she was CNN's first bureau
chief in Islamabad from March 2000 to March 2001. She
is currently on a one-year leave while she is based at Stanford
University as a John S. Knight Fellow. Last
