Suleman
Din is a Canadian born-and-bred writer who's been riding
the journalism tiger since he was 18.
He is currently a reporter for the Newark, N.J.,
Star-Ledger, where he covers a variety of topics.
He
started his career with a high school reporting internship at
The Etobicoke Guardian, a local bi-weekly in Canada. He was hooked after
enjoying the recognition received as a regular columnist, complete
with his own byline and picture gracing the front page skybox
once a week.
Suleman
graduated in the spring of 1999 from Ryerson Polytechnic University's
School of Journalism in Toronto and from the Columbia Graduate
School of Journalism in 2004. His professional experience
includes stints with a local TV broadcaster, an internship
in Reuters's Toronto bureau, on the foreign desk at the Canadian
Press, and as a copy editor at the Globe and Mail.
In
2000, he became an assistant editor for Rediff.com,
a Web site aimed at South Asians (and one of the world's most-visited news sites). After helping to set up Rediff's San Mateo,
CA, office, Suleman moved in the summer of 2001 to Rediff's
New York City office. He reports and writes about the New York
area for Rediff, and its sister newspaper, India Abroad.
For two years in a row, he won first place from the South Asian
Journalists Association for outstanding story by a journalism
student in North America. In 1999, he received first place from
SAJA in the student category for "The Long, Hot, Nuclear Summer,"
a feature piece reporting on the nuclear tests while in India.
In 2000, he won the prize for "Five
Lines for a Dead Man," a story about a friend of his.
Though
he lived for most of his life in in Toronto, Suleman travels
extensively. His favorite destination to date is Timerghara,
which he reached after an arduous trek to the Pakistan-Afghanistan
border. There, he lived for 15 days with the locals, like the
locals.
He
lives with his wife, fellow journalist Shaheen Pasha and their
daughter Iman, in New
Jersey.
