Maryland: On Oct. 3, 2002, taxi driver Premkumar A. Walekar was shot to death as part of a set of shootings by a sniper near Washington that lasted several days. His story received widespread attention, including the front-page photo below in The New York Times.

The caption reads:
Grief and Fear in Maryland
Andrew Walekar and his mother, Margaret, in Takoma Park, Md., yesterday at the funeral of Mr. Walekar's father, Premkumar A. Walekar, one of six people in the area killed by sniper fire in recent days. Page A12.
