PETER R. KANN is chairman and chief executive officer of Dow Jones & Company, publisher of The Wall Street Journal and editorial director of Dow Jones' publications.

Mr. Kann's association with Dow Jones began in the summer of 1963 as a Newspaper Fund intern in the San Francisco bureau of the Journal. He joined the paper as a staff reporter in 1964 and worked in its Pittsburgh and Los Angeles news bureaus.

In 1967, Mr. Kann became the Journal's first resident reporter in Vietnam. From 1969 through 1975, he continued to cover the Vietnam War, as well as other events across Asia, as a roving reporter based in Hong Kong. He was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1972 for distinguished reporting on international affairs for his coverage of the 1971 India-Pakistan War. See samples of his stories.

In 1976, Mr. Kann was named the first publisher and editor of The Asian Wall Street Journal, headquartered in Hong Kong.

After 12 years in Asia, Mr. Kann returned to the U.S. in 1979, and in 1980, he was named associate publisher of the Journal and a vice president of Dow Jones. In 1985, he was named an executive vice president with additional responsibility for the company's International and Magazine groups. He became a member of the company's board of directors in 1987.

Mr. Kann was appointed publisher of the Journal and editorial director of Dow Jones' publications in January 1989. Later that year, he was named president and chief operating officer of Dow Jones. He became chief executive officer in January 1991 and chairman in July 1991.

Mr. Kann is a member of the board of trustees of The Asia Society, the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, Spelman College in Atlanta and The Aspen Institute. He is a former chairman of the Pulitzer Prize board.

A native of Princeton, N.J., Mr. Kann graduated from Harvard University with a bachelor's degree in government. At Harvard he was political editor of the Harvard Crimson and a member of its editorial board. He began his newspaper career in high school as a copy boy for the Princeton Packet.

KAREN ELLIOTT HOUSE is president of the International group of Dow Jones & Company. She is responsible for the business and editorial staffs of all Dow Jones overseas publications and services, international sales operations, overseas investments and publishing partnerships. She has responsibility for the international expansion of Dow Jones Interactive Publishing and oversight for Dow Jones of CNBC Europe and CNBC Asia, a business television partnership of Dow Jones and NBC. She also continues to write about foreign affairs for The Wall Street Journal.

Ms. House began her journalism career at the Dallas Morning News. In 1974, she joined the Journal's Washington, D.C., bureau where she covered energy, environment and agriculture. She was named diplomatic correspondent in 1978, moved to New York in 1983 as assistant foreign editor and became foreign editor in 1984.

In March 1989, Ms. House was named vice president of the International Group. She was promoted to president of International in January 1995.

In 1984, Ms. House received a Pulitzer Prize for international reporting for her coverage of the Middle East. Other journalism awards include: the Overseas Press Club's Bob Considine Award for best daily newspaper interpretation of foreign affairs (1984 and 1988); the University of Southern California's Distinguished Achievement in Journalism Award (1983); Georgetown University's Edward Weintal Award for distinguished coverage of American foreign policy (1980); and the National Press Club's Edwin M. Hood Award for Excellence in Diplomatic Reporting for a series on Saudi Arabia (1982).

Ms. House is a former director and a current member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a director of the Committee to Protect Journalists. She is a trustee of Boston University and The Asia Society, and she serves on the advisory committee of the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C. She is a member of the board of trustees of the RAND Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies and is also a member of the RAND Center's visiting committee. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a former member of the advisory council for the College of Communication at the University of Texas.

A native of Matador, Texas, Ms. House received a journalism degree from the University of Texas at Austin, where she was managing editor of the student newspaper. In 1992, she received a University of Texas distinguished alumnus award, and in 1996, the university's College of Communication named her outstanding alumnus. She was awarded an honorary degree by Lafayette College, Easton, Pa., in 1992.
