SAJA PROFILE : Sharmila Kamat

SHARMILA KAMAT is a freelance writer based in New York City. While she currently has been writing science stories for the popular press, she has also written on themes as diverse as travel, humor, entertainment and the arts.

Sharmila has published science pieces in US News and World Report, New Scientist, Physical Review Focus and other publications. She has written extensively for Femina and was its Goa correspondent before coming to the USA. As part of her Femina stint, she wrote cover stories on social issues, travel features, human interest pieces and a selection of debates, interviews and musings. She has published pieces in The Times of India, The Sunday Observer, The Economic Times, Gulf Times and other publications. She has written weekly columns for various publications and also scripted and produced pieces for the local radio and TV channels in Goa, India.

Sharmila has two books to her credit, Mango Mood - a satirical look at society and Where Time Stands Still, an account of her travels in Alentejo Portugal commissioned by the Fundacao Oriente.

During her writing career, Sharmila has written on topics as diverse as Tylenol and gravitational lenses and interviewed celebrities ranging from Hema Malini to the Colonial Cousins.

Sharmila holds a PhD in Astrophysics and is based in New York City. She was selected for the American Association for the Advancement of Science Mass Media Science and Engineering Fellowship in 2001.
