SAJA PROFILE : Pooja Makhijani

POOJA MAKHIJANI is the editor of Under Her Skin: How Girls Experience Race in America (Seal Press, November 2004). Under Her Skin is an anthology of essays by women that explore through a child's lens the sometimes savage, sometimes innocent, and always complex ways in which race shapes American lives and families.

She is also the author of Mama's Saris (Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, Spring 2006).

Her bylines have appeared in in The New York Times, The Village Voice, The Newark Star-Ledger, The Indian Express, Time Out New York, NY ARTS Magazine, India Today and Time Out New York Kids among others.

She is the recipient of the 2003 Magazine Merit Award Honor in Nonfiction by the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators for her essay, "The First Time," in the November/December 2003 issue of Cicada.

A graduate of The Johns Hopkins University, she is currently student in the masters of fine arts program in creative writing (nonfiction) at Sarah Lawrence College.

She lives in New York City with her husband.
