ARTHUR J. PAIS is an editor at Rediff.com and a journalism teacher. He writes regularly for India Today, The Economic Times, Far Eastern Economic Review, Chicago Tribune, Newsday and various in-flight magazines.
He specializes in arts and food writing, but is also a prolific features and hard news reporter.
In May 2000, after two decades in NYC, he and Betty, his wife ("my everyday troubleshooter and real editor"), moved to the San Francisco Bay area to help launch ThinkIndia.com, a site dedicated to the South Asian market. In 2001, Rediff bought ThinkIndia and Arthur and Betty moved back to New York.
That also completed Arthur's circle with Rediff: In April 1999, Arthur had launched the U.S. edition of Rediff.com, a leading India-based news portal.
He has taught journalism at the New School and Marymount Manhattan College, and has been a mentor to scores of young journalists in the city.
Even though he has interviewed such personalities as Amar Bose, Vinod Khosla, Desh Deshpande, Sir Richard Attenborough, Robin Williams, Dame Judy Dench and Jodi Foster, he says he is most proud of his teaching experience. "Nothing gives me more satisfaction than getting my students' work published," he says.
Arthur is the co-author (with Dave DeWitt) of "A World of Curries: From Bombay to Bangkok, Java to Jamaica, Exciting Cookery Featuring Fresh and Exotic Spices" (Little Brown, 1994). The book was nominated for a James Beard Culinary Prize for food writing.
Arthur is a former member of the SAJA Executive Board.
Before he moved to the U.S. in 1982, Arthur wrote extensively for Sunday and Filmfare magazines in India.
