SAJA PROFILE : Chhavi Sachdev
Freelancer: Print/Web/Radio

Chhavi Sachdev is about to try to stop defining her medium. What she’s not is a TV journalist. From print and web, she has now moved to radio and is back in India freelancing in all media (other than TV) after a long stint in the United States.

She’s currently a communications consultant working in multimedia, handling projects for cool not-for-profits like Breakthrough.tv and also getting to know the burgeoning field of radio in India.

Most recently, she was a producer, the new media architect, and fill-in-on-air host for Radio Today Broadcasting’s flagship station, Meow 104.8 FM, in Delhi.

Before moving back to desh, she was freelancing even as she was gainfully employed as staff editor/writer at Boston University’s College of Engineering. Here, she budgeted, edited, and wrote the alumni magazine for the college’s four departments and worked on their Web site and sundry publications.

Chhavi grew up in India, shuttling between Bombay and Delhi. After a miserable year of college in Delhi, she fled to the more rigorous academic life in the U.S. Here, she double-majored in Psychology and Literature in a college that is not even a speck on the map (full scholarship, bhai), and contributed to the campus paper once in a while. After burning out completely in her three years in Tennessee, she took a year off to figure out life, the universe, and grad school.

While teaching English to 10th graders in the backwaters of Poland, she finally figured out how to meld her love for words and her obsessive tendency to dig into the psyche of just everybody. In 1999, she arrived with her two suitcases at Northeastern University's graduate school of journalism (erm, full scholarship again. Truly.)

Since then, she covered the South Asian beat in Boston for several publications in print and on the Web, with some fluff lifestyle stories, profiles, reviews, and the occasional food piece thrown in. After finishing at Northeastern, she did a stint at Technology Research News, an international science newswire. She then did more than a year as a news producer at Boston.com, the region’s premiere news portal, and part of the Boston Globe.

She then did 2.5 years as international editor at Science & Theology News, where she wrote and edited the international section, coordinated translations of their in-house stories, and directed content for their Web presence.
