Arun
Rath is one of the most senior South Asian journalists working
in American radio.
Born
a Boston Brahmin (of the Hindu rather than Plutocrat stripe),
Arun acquired a semi-classical education at Reed College in
Oregon ("Atheism, Communism and Free Love").
Arun
restarted his life at NPR as an intern for Talk of the Nation.
Soon after, he worked for Weekly Edition: The Best of NPR News,
and then moved to NPR's Science Desk, where among other duties
he helped produce Sounds Like Science, hosted by Ira Flatow.
In 1999, Arun returned to Talk of the Nation to assume the responsibilities
of director. During the last six months of his stint on Talk,
Arun devoted much of his energies to developing the sound of
the Changing Face of America broadcasts-- live, town-hall style
forums held in a different city every month, and featuring live
local music.
During
his time at NPR, Arun also worked on a wide range of other projects,
including directing live coverage and specials during the impeachment
trial of President Clinton, and directing other projects such
as a recent Earth Day Special.
In
late 2000, Arun moved from Washington to NYC, to join WNYC as
senior producer of "On
The Media," a show that airs nationwide on NPR.
