The
Rules
You are invited
to submit entries to this eighth annual contest. The awards honor
quality coverage of one of the world's most important--and under
covered--regions, the Indian subcontinent. They also recognize outstanding
work by journalists of South Asian origin in the United States and
Canada.
Submissions can include articles, photographs and new media pieces
published, and broadcasts aired, between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31,
2003.
In addition to the 11 annual awards, the SAJA Board announces a one-time award to mark SAJA's 10th Anniversary: Outstanding coverage of South Asians in the United States or Canada by an individual journalist, 1994-2003; all media (details of this award are below).
Awards will presented at SAJA's 10th Anniversary Convention:
June 17-20, 2004 in NYC - winners will be notified approximately 4-5 weeks in advance.
Postmark
deadline: Friday, April 9, 2004.

A special one-time award to celebrate SAJA's 10th Anniversary
12. Outstanding coverage of South Asians in the United States or Canada by an individual journalist, 1994-2003; all media
(plaques for first, second and third prize winners)
This is a one-time only award, to honor a journalist working for a North America media outlet (mainstream or ethnic press; in print, TV or online) who has produced a strong portfolio of work covering the growing South Asian community in the U.S. or Canada. The entries should consist of three to five stories, representing the best work by that journalist and can have been published or aired any time between Jan. 1, 1994, and Dec. 31, 2003.
ENTRY
REQUIREMENTS
- For
all categories--except the student prize--only published/aired entries
will be accepted. Non-published/aired student entries must be accompanied
by a professor's note stating the work was executed for a class.
- Three
copies of each article/script/photograph (+ one copy of any VHS or Beta or audio tapes
or CDs) are required.
- New
media entries should consist of a page of URLs, as applicable (printouts
are optional). It's the entrant's responsibility to make sure the entries are accessible at least through June of 2004.
- Photography
entries should consist of glossy prints no larger than 11"x14", and
tearsheets/Web print.
- Fees
apply to each submission (one piece or one set of pieces that is clearly
marked as a series) in a given category. Individuals and news organizations
may submit more than one entry in a category, but each submission
must be accompanied by its own entry fee.
Fee schedule is as follows:
$10.00 for each submission by a student
$20.00 for each submission
by an individual journalist
$50.00 for each submission by a company (even if on behalf an
individual journalist)
For the student and individual categories, there is a $5 discount for submissions by SAJA
members (you can sign up
here).
- Judges
reserve the right to move an entry to another category, and to not
award a prize.
- SAJA
Board members during the eligibility year or the judging year are
not allowed to enter.

Judging
Process
A nominating panel of journalists and South Asia experts will
narrow the submitted entries and a second panel of senior journalists
will select first, second and thrid prize winners.
