PHILIP SCHEFFLER
Executive Editor, 60 Minutes
Philip Scheffler has been second in command
with day-to-day responsibility for 60 Minutes since he became its senior producer
in 1980. He has been at CBS for over 46 years, 25 of those spent helping to
shape 60 Minutes into the most watched news program in history.
After joining CBS News in 1951 as a copy boy,
he soon began working for the CBS Evening News and other news broadcasts as
a writer, reporter and editor until 1960.
In 1964, Scheffler became a producer of documentary
and special news broadcasts, including CBS Reports. He produced more than
a hundred such broadcasts, including "The Search for the Safer Car"
(1966); "Robert F. Kennedy (1967); "Crisis in Korea" (1968)
and "The Changing War in Indochina" (1971).
CBS News broadcasts that Scheffler has worked
on have received numerous awards, including the Peabody, the Emmy and the
Columbia-duPont. He has worked throughout the world, including six assignments
in Vietnam. He has reported from all but three of the United States and from
more than 50 countries.
Scheffler is a graduate of City College of New
York and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
