GLORIA STEINEM
Founding editor, Ms. magazine

Gloria Steinem is one of the most influential writers, editors and activists of our time. She travels in this and other countries as a lecturer and feminist organizer, and is a frequent media interviewer and spokeswoman on issues of equality.

Currently, she is a writer and consulting editor for Ms. magazine, the international feminist bi-monthly that she co-founded in 1972. Moving Beyond Words, a collection of essays, was published by Simon & Schuster in 1994 and appeared on bestseller lists here and in Canada. In 1992, she published Revolution from Within: A Book of Self-Esteem with Little, Brown & Co. It was #1 national bestseller lists here and in other English-speaking countries, became the subject of a Time cover story and was translated into 15 languages. Her other books include Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions and Marilyn: Norma Jeane. Her writing has also appeared in New York magazine, a weekly she helped found in 1968.

She has won dozens of awards and honorary degrees. She was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, New York. In March 1995, she was the subject of an A&E "Biography." Parenting magazine selected her for its Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995 for her work in promoting girls' self-esteem.

After growing up mainly in the Midwest, where her unconventional childhood included no full year of schooling until she was 12, Gloria Steinem graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Smith College in 1956. She then lived in India for almost two years as a Chester Bowles Fellow where she wrote for Indian publications, and was influenced by Gandhian activism.
