    The Editor, News (PM shift) is responsible for all afternoon newscast radio content. This includes getting the afternoon newscasts on the air, editing stories, leaving completed segments for the AM newscasts, completing the overnight rundown and communicating instructions for work in progress and possible next-day assignments for the morning crew.

    This Editor is member of a News Desk that assigns and edits stories throughout the day for newscasts and other radio programs. This editor may assist in the assignment and editing of news content for the web and mobile. This editor reports to the Senior Editor, News & Newscasts and works directly with AM News Editor, digital news team, morning and afternoon news anchors, Forum team staff, producers, general assignment reporters and the broader newsroom.

    This editor must be able to work nights.

    Essential Functions:

    1. Takes hand-off from Senior Editor, News & Newscasts, and Managing Editor, News, and manages afternoon and overnight news desk.
    2. Keeps tabs of wires and media outlets for late-breaking news.
    3. Oversees afternoon and evening news team (newscast anchors, producers and reporters), including scheduling stories for newscasts, setting reporter deadlines and coordinating with producers and anchors on story selection and newscast lineup.
    4. Adjusts assignments and makes new assignments when necessary to reflect changes in news planning and news developments during the daily news cycle and to assure there is adequate material for AM newscasts.
    5. Alerts relevant departments of changes to newscast schedules and studio production appointments.
    6. Edits daily scripts and audio for KQED News, The California Report and other radio programs.
    7. Edits text and photo content for the web, mobile and social media.
    8. Finalizes daily production of all radio content; prepares overnight memo for start of next day’s news cycle, and sends out communications to internal and outside parties.
    9. Oversees equipment check-in during early evening hours.

    Other Job Functions:

    1. Gathers tape and conducts interviews.
    2. Conducts and oversees research for story assignment, development and production.
    3. Assumes other duties as assigned.

    Credentials/Education Required: 

    Five years broadcast editing production on radio news desk or equivalent news operation experience. 

    Knowledge/Experience Required:

    1. Excellent writing and editing and radio story organization skills.
    2. Excellent knowledge of sound editing and radio production techniques.
    3. Excellent news judgment.
    4. Excellent organizational skills to work in briskly paced, multi-platform news operation.
    5. Ability to edit in variety of publishing platforms and mediums (radio, web, mobile, photography, video)
    6. Thorough knowledge of journalistic principles, ethics and standards.
    7. Strong communications skills.
    8. Strong reporting skills.
    9. Demonstrated ability to work well with both veteran and new reporters.
    10. Ability to work under deadline pressures.

    Knowledge/Experience Desired

    1. Working knowledge of the 9-county Bay Area and California preferred.
    2. Working knowledge of a range of significant regional and state-wide public affairs subjects such as government and politics, the economy, education, health, immigration, legal affairs, the environment, transportation, and the arts preferred. 
    3. Experience working in a demographically diverse news environment strongly desired
    4. Experience in building news teams and news operations a plus.
    5. Five years broadcast editing production on radio news desk or equivalent news operation experience. B.A. degree in journalism, broadcast, mass communications or comparable media curriculum.
    6. Language skills a plus.
