Quartz seeks a versatile and enterprising business reporter to cover its How We Spend obsession.

The successful candidate will be fascinated by how goods are bought and sold, and how consumption is shaped by changes in technology, tastes, and science. They’ll understand the products we buy are connected to a global web of trade, and that there are as many great stories in manufacturing, supply chains, and commodities as there are in stores, advertising, and marketing.

This reporter will pay close attention to Amazon, and will keep an eye on dozens of other companies, from LVMH to Procter & Gamble to Nike. They’ll be interested in the implications of forced labor in Xinjiang, and the environmental impact of fast fashion. They’ll be able to read earnings statements, analyze deals, and develop sources across the sector.

We are looking for a journalist with:

    • Experience covering retail, manufacturing, or fashion—or deep familiarity with consumer sector trends and companies
    • At least five years of professional reporting experience
    • A nimble and adaptable approach
    • Data fluency
    • Excellent writing skills, with an ability to tell stories with conviction, clarity, and flair

At Quartz we take a global, interdisciplinary, creative, and forward-looking approach to covering the news. We love stories that connect the dots, or fill in the blanks other articles miss.

You should feel equally comfortable reporting and writing short pieces of news analysis, chart-based articles, scoops of fact or insight, and deeply reported features. The successful candidate also will contribute to Quartz’s membership emails and Daily Brief.

All locations will be considered but we are looking for candidates who are able to work on US or European business hours. (Quartz is remote-first, which means you would be onboarding in a remote environment.) To apply, please submit a cover letter, resume, and five links to relevant stories you’ve written and reported.

In the US, this position is covered by the collective bargaining agreement between Quartz Media and the NewsGuild of New York, CWA Local 31003, AFL-CIO. The contractual salary minimum for this position is $63,000 per year.

     Quartz Values

We look for team members who embody the following values:

    • Boldness and creativity. There’s an opportunity to build something new every day, and we always aim to produce great and inspiring work.
    • Taking ownership. We experiment thoughtfully, challenge ourselves to uphold high standards, and leave things better than we found them.
    • Users first. Communicating with empathy means making sure your message isn’t just sent, but received, and emphasizing clarity in our journalism.
    • A more global world. Quartz was created for people who are curious about the world far beyond themselves, reject nationalist ideology, and believe that all cultures play a vital role in the global economy.
