    Job Description:

    The Boston Globe is seeking an experienced, versatile, and energetic editor for a permanent, full-time position with one of its most popular sections, the Boston Globe Magazine. Delivering a lively mix of reported narrative features, opinion and personal essay columns, and themed issues that serve as tent poles (Bostonians of the Year, Top Places to Work, Top Spots to Live, Women and Power, Travel and Your Home issues), the weekly magazine produces some of the most well-read stories on bostonglobe.com and is a destination within the Sunday newspaper. As part of the magazine staff, the articles editor assigns and edits compelling longform feature stories, themed issue packages, and weekly columns on a range of topics, shepherding stories from conception through publication for both digital and print. Qualified candidates have a generalist’s ability to develop engaging content on a range of topics, including higher education, politics, culture, health and science, the arts, sports, and interior design. You’ll work with writers to produce sparkling, error-free copy, editing for angle, structure, substance, voice, and clarity. 

    Responsibilities:

    • Generate feature story ideas, recruit freelance writers, assign and edit longform narrative features
    • Assign and manage themed issues on such topics as education, health, arts, interior design
    • Review and respond to pitches from freelance writers and recruit new freelancers who bring fresh perspectives 
    • Generate ideas and assign weekly Perspective opinion columns that respond to topics in the news and to cultural trends
    • Produce other pages and columns as needed
    • Prospect for pre-publication book excerpts and negotiate contracts with book publishers
    • Work with designers and photography department to conceive of art and design treatment for covers, columns, and features
    • Participate in weekly story planning meetings
    • Edit and sometimes write the magazine’s weekly newsletter and “subscriber weekly” story teases
    • Pitch in with Web headline writing, print coverlines, social media promotions, and other production tasks as needed

    Qualifications:

    • At least three years of post-college longform narrative feature editing experience at professionally produced publications or sites
    • The editing chops to guide, shape, and polish stories to meet Globe Magazine standards
    • A deep and diverse contact list of talented New England-based writers you will tap for story pitches
    • Strong organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple responsibilities on tight deadlines 
    • A sense for the stories and angles that will grab readers and drive engagement
    • Bachelor’s degree or higher
    • A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment
