    Investigations Editor

THE CITY is seeking an experienced, ambitious and skilled editor to lead a team of reporters to produce groundbreaking investigative journalism that exposes corruption, wrongdoing, negligence and violations of public trust.

    The Organization

Launched in 2019, THE CITY is New York City’s preeminent nonprofit, nonpartisan local news organization. Working across all five boroughs, our award-winning journalists bring diverse skills and backgrounds to the task of covering New York’s neighborhoods, holding the powerful to account and making sense of the greatest city in the world.

Journalism by THE CITY uncovered the scheme that led to the indictment and resignation of New York’s lieutenant governor, helped secure repairs in public housing, prompted solitary confinement reforms following the preventable death of a transgender woman on Rikers Island, and led to legislation addressing grueling working conditions of New York’s delivery workers. During the COVID pandemic, THE CITY remedied inequities in vaccine access, prompted tougher oversight of emergency city contracts and led the Department of Education to curtail child welfare investigations of families whose children lacked the technology to sign into online school.

THE CITY is currently in a growth phase that will add reporters and editors to our newsroom, strengthen our business capabilities and build our revenue-generating capacities.

    The Position

THE CITY is bolstering its investigative firepower, adding a team of reporters to its award-winning newsroom. The Investigations Editor will work with editorial leadership to steer this expansion, from hiring and organization to execution and further growth. You will build and manage a team of reporters but also edit across the whole newsroom, touching enterprise and accountability journalism in all stages. The Investigative Editor reports to the Deputy Editor and will also work closely with the Editor in Chief.

    As Investigations Editor you will…

    • Conceive, assign and edit THE CITY’s most ambitious investigative journalism, with a focus on New York’s most powerful and yet most unchecked institutions, power players and businesses.
    • Help set our investigative agenda and ensure that THE CITY’s investigations fulfill our mission to serve all New Yorkers, empower citizens and advance democratic accountability.
    • Manage multi-faceted, long-term projects that may involve multiple reporters and editors, external partners, wide-ranging information requests, complex datasets, visualizations and ethical and legal considerations. Do it all under deadline and competition pressure.
    • Make sure our investigations are crystal clear, masterfully told, narratively engrossing, vividly described and just in general unputdownable, in any format or at any length.
    • Build and maintain a steady flow of investigative leads, including through public records, information requests, source cultivation and data analysis.
    • Drive home the impact of THE CITY’s investigations so that they capture the urgent attention of policymakers and the public and lead to better outcomes for all New Yorkers. Keep tabs on it all.
    • Bulletproof our work through precision editing and fact-checking and liaise with counsel on legal reviews.
    • Manage a team of reporters and inspire them to do the best work of their careers.
    • Keep abreast of new developments in investigative reporting and journalism broadly, bringing innovative practices to THE CITY.
    • Collaborate with communications, development and other stakeholders to make sure our investigative work is captured fully and accurately. Help write award submissions.

    Qualifications

    • At least 5 years of experience editing investigative journalism with a proven track record of holding the powerful to account and delivering results in the public interest
    • A passion for all things New York and a deep investment in the power of local reporting
    • Experience with investigative reporting methods, including obtaining primary materials through information requests, source cultivation and data acquisition and analysis
    • Impeccable judgment and the ability to safeguard the highest journalistic standards under pressure
    • A love of collaboration in and outside the newsroom and the ability to have tough conversations while building mutual trust and respect
    • Ability to multitask, flipping seamlessly between poking around on leads to final proofing an investigation to representing our work post-publication
    • A track record of mentoring reporters to achieve their best work
    • Last but not least, bring enthusiasm, curiosity and excitement to the newsroom
