    Overview

This position is open until filled.

The Racial Justice and Social Equity reporter will cover systemic racism, shifting demographics and inequality in San Diego and the Imperial Valley. We will focus on government institutions, workplaces and community settings, with a dual emphasis on data-driven reporting and people-oriented storytelling.

The reporter will be part of a larger team tasked with covering social inequity in housing, social services, immigration, schools, workplaces, cultural institutions, the legal system and access to healthcare.

Cultivating the beat is important, but all KPBS reporters will work outside their beats, or conversely team up on their beats, as the news merits.

The reporter will work at the direction of the Director of News & Editorial Strategy (DNES), under the supervision of the News Editor, and work in coordination with other members of the News Division.

KPBS news beats are, but not exclusive to, arts & culture, health, education, environment, investigative, and military. The reporter will produce news stories that may cross beats at the assignment of the News Editor, and that can be distributed on KPBS radio, TV, KPBS.org, KPBS social networking and KPBS mobile. The news stories will be produced in formats such as, but not limited to, radio newscasts, in-depth radio features, TV packages, multimedia projects and special reports as assigned.

The reporter may be assigned to help fill in for other newsroom positions, such as anchoring newscasts or web producing, and appear as a guest or host on KPBS TV and radio programs. The reporter will produce local content and prepare final productions that can be distributed on all KPBS platforms.

The reporter is expected to participate in station on-air fundraising activities, and make appearances for KPBS community building events and other public relations activities.

This position is within the SAG-AFTRA bargaining unit.
