Named Professor of Journalism – International Journalism

Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism (www.journalism.columbia.edu) is currently seeking a named professor of Journalism (tenure track, open rank). As the Patti Birch Professor of International Journalism, the incumbent in this endowed position has the primary purpose to strengthen our teaching of international journalism. The holder of the professorship would also serve as a leader of the new Simon and June Li Center for International Journalism, whose purpose is to fund programs, postgraduate fellowships, and scholarships. The Birch Professor will develop a vision for the Li Center and act as a convener and thought leader, as well as be the public face of the School, when it comes to global issues.

As a full-time member of our faculty, the incumbent will teach courses that are, often but not exclusively, focused on the area of international journalism. The professor will work with faculty and staff to continue to improve the School’s curriculum, read applications, serve on faculty committees as assigned, supervise master’s projects and theses, and otherwise advise students.

Candidates should have professional experience in both traditional and digital journalism techniques, and the ability to teach using an integration of these skills. They must be up to date with best practices, digital workflow, and modern tools used to create and distribute content on various platforms. The School embraces diversity, so we seek candidates with the ability to work with and attract dynamic and diverse groups of faculty, staff, and students. The search committee is especially interested in candidates who, through their research, teaching, and/or service, show their commitment to diversity in this field.

Candidates should also be able to demonstrate scholarly and/or professional accomplishments worthy of appointment to a full-time faculty position, including an ability to teach graduate students at a major research university. A bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred.

This position is expected to begin on July 1, 2021, pending budgetary and administrative approval. Screening of applications will begin by January 2021, and the search will remain open no less than thirty days after posting and until the position is filled.
