News Fellowship – All Things Considered

About the position

New Hampshire Public Radio (NHPR) is seeking a curious and creative journalist to join our News team as a fellow. The successful applicant will learn skills in interviewing, news writing, audio production, and potentially on air hosting as a producer for All Things Considered, our daily afternoon news program. The fellow will generate timely story ideas, book guests, research and write scripts, edit recorded interviews, and prepare interviews for publication on NHPR.org. They will actively participate in our newsroom's daily editorial meetings and learn public radio journalism techniques, ethics, and best practices. They will have the opportunity to conceive and lead special series or other reporting projects, and depending on interest and aptitude, may get trained as a substitute on air host.

We’re looking for someone who thrives on breaking daily news, but also wants to understand the deeper context behind a story.  This person must be eager to follow New Hampshire news as well as national and international stories. The ideal candidate will have outstanding writing skills, initiative, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and efficiently. 

The fellowship is a full-time, eight month position. Fellows receive a stipend of $25,000 plus benefits, including company-paid individual health and dental insurance and paid vacation, sick time and holidays. This position is based in Concord, New Hampshire. With beaches, lakes, cities, and mountains, New Hampshire is both a beautiful and dynamic place to live.

NHPR is committed to mentoring our journalists, including candidates from untraditional professional backgrounds, and helping them develop as journalists and leaders. Fellows will have the opportunity to attend professional training or a conference during their time at the station.

Responsibilities include:

• Pitch, research, and produce interviews for NHPR’s All Things Considered.
• Prepare and post timely digital versions of broadcast stories.
• Prepare newscast or other versions of stories, as needed.
• Coordinate with NHPR’s Morning Edition producer on breaking news.
• Stay up to date on news and state and regional issues.

Qualifications

We believe a strong newsroom includes journalists from a range of backgrounds, with different skills, experiences, and passions. • Excellent writing and organizational skills, and ability to meet deadlines.
• Demonstrated news judgment in recognizing the relative importance of a news story and in developing stories.
• Ability to develop creative approaches to news stories.               
• Ability to represent NHPR standards and code of ethics in the course of interviewing, reporting, and use of social media.

Other qualifications that might be useful:

• Experience with live on air hosting for broadcast.
• Technologically versatile with willingness to expand skills. Multimedia skills, including experience in producing or editing data visualizations, video or other digital media, as well as audio, are desirable.  
• Proficiency in a language other than English.
