    Job Description Summary

    The Los Angeles Times is seeking a data and graphics journalist to cover the newsroom’s top storylines.

    The reporter will tell visual stories, build data-driven applications and craft digital designs that will inform and engage our readers.

    Job Description

    They will be a leading player in the Data and Graphics Department, a team of reporters and computer programmers in The Times newsroom. Its journalism has attracted millions of readers, sparked government reforms and helped win some of our industry’s highest awards.

    Examples of its approach can be seen in coverage of the coronavirus pandemic, California’s perennial fire season, the sudden death of Kobe Bryant, our local elections, the deeper issues raised by recent protests and numerous other topics.

    Requirements:

    • Significant experience conceiving and developing data-driven work for the general public

    • Well versed in the fundamentals of computer programming, data visualization and digital design

    • Experience sketching and pitching visual ideas

    • Ready to lead a small team of their peers on a tough deadline 

    • Experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript

    • A track record building and deploying database-backed applications

    High standards are expected. Creativity, ambition and risk-taking are prized above all.

Cover letters should introduce the team to your best work and demonstrate a specialized skill you would bring to the team, such as data analysis, 3D modeling or illustration. We also ask that you provide a short summary of the role you played in creating each work sample.

    This position is classified as a Graphics and Data Journalist within the Los Angeles Times Guild. Occasional night and weekend work is required.

    The Times newsroom is currently working remotely. Candidates who live outside the Los Angeles area are encouraged to apply. Moving to the area is not a requirement for this position.
