This year’s awards include categories for the Daniel Pearl Award (investigative journalism), business, arts and culture, international, student and general excellence reporting, along with a new category- Documentary-Short.
The SAJA Awards help further our mission of supporting newsroom diversity and promoting coverage of issues related to South Asia worldwide.
Entries are due by 11:59 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Sept. 1.

Chicago Journalism Unity Picnic
Join SAJA in Chicago for the Journalism Unity Picnic! We’re co-hosting this year’s gathering on Sept. 10 from 5:30–8 p.m. at Promontory Point. SAJA board member Safia Samee Ali will be there representing us. Come say hello, meet fellow journalists and enjoy an evening of community and connection. The event is free, but RSVP here by Aug. 28.

Empower Virginia 2026
The South Asian Business Council of Virginia (SABCVA) is inviting SAJA members to attend Empower Virginia 2026 taking place on Sunday Sept. 20 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel Dulles in Herndon, VA. The conference is expected to bring together more than 1,500 business leaders, entrepreneurs, investors, government officials and others from across the region. Complimentary VIP media passes are available for accredited journalists and media professionals. Learn more about the event.
IRE AccessFest 2026
Investigative Reporters & Editors (IRE) AccessFest returns for its virtual conference from Oct. 8–10 with training for journalists on accessibility, diversity, belonging, equity, inclusion in newsrooms and news coverage. Registration is $76 for professional members and $26 for student members. Fellowships are also available. Learn more about the event. |

Scholarships & Grants
The Freedom of the Press Foundation is accepting submissions for the Penlight Prize, a new $25,000 award recognizing outstanding paywall-free journalism substantially based on records obtained through FOIA or state and local public records laws. The winner will also receive a paid trip to New York City for an awards celebration. For more information and to apply by Sept 1 go to penlightprize.org.
South Asia Speaks is accepting applications for its free, year-long literary mentorship program for South Asian writers working on their first book in English. For the first time, the program is open to the South Asian diaspora worldwide, with mentorship available across fiction, nonfiction, poetry, translation and oral history. Applications are open Sept. 1–30.
The Fund for Investigative Journalism is accepting applications for reporting grants of up to $10,000 and seed grants of up to $2,500 for investigative projects. The deadline is Sept. 14. |

The Associated Press is looking for a Race & Ethnicity Reporter based in New York to cover Hispanic and Latino communities across the U.S. The 18-month position is geared toward early-career journalists and requires professional fluency in English and Spanish. Apply by Aug. 28.
CNN Business is hiring a New York-based senior producer to shoot, edit and develop compelling video stories and original series for its business and media team.
The Atlantic is seeking a senior editor to build and lead its forthcoming members-only book club, which will curate a distinctive and engaging program for readers. The role is based in Washington, D.C. or New York City, with remote candidates considered.
KFMB-TV San Diego is looking for a digital content producer who will be responsible for assignment editing and digital production, helping plan, produce and curate daily news coverage across streaming, digital, social and broadcast platforms.
The California Post is seeking a senior reporter to break news, land exclusives and deliver deeply reported stories with impact in California and nationwide.
Applications are open for The New York Times Newsroom Editing Residency, a two-year program for early-career journalists interested in editing. Residents will begin with four months on the newsroom editing team before rotating through longer assignments across the newsroom. Applications are due by Sept. 8.
AAPI Civic Engagement Fund is accepting applications for its 2027 Creative Catalyst Fellowship, supporting artists whose work engages the public on issues facing AAPI communities. Up to eight fellows will receive $30,000 to create work around this year’s theme, “Belonging.

Founded in March 1994 with just 18 members, the South Asian Journalists Association (SAJA) now represents more than 1,000 journalists of South Asian origin across the U.S. and Canada. SAJA serves as a network for training, inspiration, and support—not only for South Asian journalists but for anyone covering South Asia and its diaspora. SAJA also aims to improve the coverage of the Subcontinent and its diaspora.
