    What We Do:

Research reporters work collaboratively with ProPublica colleagues across a wide range of topics. We investigate people, companies and government agencies; search court records; conduct academic literature research; track down publicly available data and curate original datasets for investigations.

    What We’re Looking for:

We sometimes have the need for additional help on longer term projects: populating original datasets, conducting thorough searches in legal databases, investigating specific individuals and more.

    Relevant Skills:

The general skills we’re looking for could include:

    • Demonstrated ability searching legal resources such as PACER, Courtlink, Westlaw or local court systems.
    • Demonstrated ability using aggregated public records such as Nexis, TLO, Accurint or Pipl.
    • Ability to review large document sets and extract relevant information with accuracy.
    • Facility searching social media.

The tasks you'd be doing could include:

    • Conducting legislative histories of specific policies.
    • Conducting broad news searches, including for video or audio assets.
    • Conducting academic or archival research.
    • Create original datasets from publicly available data.

We’re looking for people who are detail oriented and good communicators.

    All the Logistics:

Interested? Use this form to send us your resume and a cover letter describing the work you’ve done or skills that you have that are specific to the examples above.

We’ll be looking at applications on a rolling basis as projects come up. Based on your skill level and experience, we’ll talk about hourly, daily or weekly rates on an individual basis. You can work remotely from anywhere in the United States, as long as you can stay in touch with the Eastern time zone.

We are dedicated to improving our newsroom, in part by better reflecting the people we cover. (Here is a breakdown of our staff.)

We are committed to diversity and building an inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds and ages. And we are taking steps to meet that commitment. We especially encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including women, people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities. We are an equal opportunity employer and prohibit discrimination and harassment of any kind. All employment decisions are made without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, age or any other status protected under applicable law.
