    The Managing Editor, Digital News is responsible for news produced by the KQED newsroom for KQED’s digital platforms: web, mobile and social. This Managing Editor supervises an online news team and coordinates online assignments and projects with other editors and their teams. This position is a key stakeholder in developing and implementing KQED’s online news strategies.

    The managing editor of digital news will lead the organization to focus strategically on the articulation and growth of our digital presence. Specifically, the managing editor of digital news will help form and direct a newly restructured digital production and editorial team to better reflect KQED’s mission to deliver insightful, in-depth and must-have news and service content to a growing and more diverse audience. This person will work directly with the director of news, as well as editors overseeing KQED newscasts, The California Report, and desk teams covering housing, economic equity, climate, education, politics and more.

    In their role, this person is responsible for the editorial standards, editorial planning and coordination of digital news coverage and the publication and presentation of news on KQEDNews.org home page, its relevant news sections and other radio program’s web pages.  

    This editor oversees the journalism requirements for the development of digital tools and delivery systems for distribution and presentation of digital news and is responsible for the journalism requirements within social media policies and news partnerships.

    This position oversees news produced by the KQED News teams, and distributed via social media, mobile and other emerging digital platforms.

    This role will work hybrid between working inKQED's newly renovated headquarters and working remotely. KQED requires employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, or to provide documentation of a need for exemption.

    Essential Functions:

    1. Oversees daily operation of KQEDNews.org.
    2. Assigns and edits stories, photographs, graphics, videos, audio and other news content for digital platforms.
    3. Supervises work of direct reports (digital editors, digital producers, interns, data journalists, bloggers, visual and video journalists, and more); schedules staff, and conducts performance evaluations.
    4. Supervises work of other staff producing news for digital platforms.
    5. Provides journalism requirements in the development of digital tools and the delivery, distribution and presentation of digital news.
    6. Coordinates with other Senior Editors and Senior Producers on long-term news planning.
    7. Coordinates with other Senior Editors and Senior Producers on digital news training, equipment evaluation, operational protocols and standards and monitoring of emerging technologies impacting news.
    8. Coordinates with Television, Education, Communications and other KQED Departments on joint and shared operations and initiatives involving news.
    9. Manages on call and freelance contracts, invoices and rates for digital news content.

    Other Job Functions:

    1. Hands-on online news work such as news blogging, story editing and reporting.
    2. Edits stories.
    3. Collect audio, conduct interviews.
    4. Assumes other duties as assigned.

    Knowledge/Experience Required:

    1. Thorough knowledge of journalistic principles, ethics and standards.
    2. Excellent news judgment
    3. Excellent knowledge and experience in managing online news operations.
    4. Excellent organizational skills to manage briskly paced, multi-platform news operation.
    5. Excellent knowledge of current and emerging technologies impacting journalism, including web, mobile and social media.
    6. Excellent communications skills.
    7. Strong project management skills.
    8. Ability to work under deadline pressures.
    9. Demonstrated ability to problem-solve and innovate.
    10. Demonstrated ability to work well with both veteran and new staff.
    11. Demonstrated ability to work in teams and across departments.
    12. Demonstrated ability to work with external partners and collaborations.

    Knowledge/Experience Desired:

    1. Five years experience working in an online news operation is strongly desired.
    2. Experience in broadcast news is a plus.
    3. Working knowledge of the 9-county Bay Area and the Sacramento region is a plus.
    4. Experience working in a demographically diverse news environment strongly desired.
    5. Experience in building news teams and news operations a plus.
