ProPublica is looking for journalists to join Electionland, one of the largest collaborative reporting projects in the United States. You’ll help hundreds of local reporters cover voting barriers during the 2020 presidential election.

Electionland doesn’t focus on the candidates or on who is winning. We focus on the things that prevent people from voting: Vote by mail problems, long lines, broken voting machines, confusion around voter ID requirements, changed voting locations, use of provisional ballots, language access problems, harassment by challengers at the polls, misinformation, cybersecurity incidents, poor pandemic protections, etc.

The assignment will run from Sept. 28 to Nov. 3. This is a part-time job, with a roughly five-hour per week commitment for five weeks and a full working day on Tuesday, Nov. 3. A full-time contract position is also available. The position is remote, but you must live in and be eligible to work in the United States.

There will be one mandatory, paid full-day training session the week of Sept. 21. You will be expected to participate in six five-hour shifts between Sept. 28 and Nov. 2, scheduled based on your availability, and all day on Election Day.

The pay is $30 per hour. This position does not include benefits.

    We’re looking for someone who:

    • Has terrific research skills, with experience using datasets for reporting.

    • Is excited about reporting stories about election integrity and voting rights.

    • Is passionate about collaborative journalism and thrilled about helping local reporters produce stories on Election Day.

    • Is willing to think creatively about the best ways to collaborate across newsrooms.

    • Ideally has experience doing local reporting, preferably local politics.

We know there are great candidates who won’t fit everything we’ve described above or who have important skills we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply. There’s a place on the application for you to tell us more.

We are dedicated to improving our newsroom, in part by better reflecting the people we cover. (Here is a breakdown of our own staff.) We are committed to building an inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds and ages, and we’re taking active steps to meet this commitment. We especially encourage members of historically underrepresented communities to apply, including people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities.

If all of this sounds exciting to you, apply using this form.

If you have questions, email rachel.glickhouse@propublica.org.
