THE CITY (THECITY.nyc), an independent nonprofit news platform dedicated to serving the people of New York through hard-hitting journalism, is seeking candidates for paid summer internships for the summer of 2021.

This is not a get-coffee-and-shuffle-paperwork internship. We are looking for student journalists at the undergraduate and graduate levels who will arrive with some reporting chops. You will hone and add skills to your repertoire by working in a top-notch local newsroom (virtual or otherwise).

You should walk in with ideas ready to go on your first day and an understanding of how to generate and pursue story leads in this great city during these challenging times.

In addition to working on your own pieces, you will also help our staffers report their stories — always with due credit.

Duties include pitching and fielding stories, scouring databases, helping with Freedom of Information Law requests, taking photographs at times and prepping social media language for your articles.

We’re looking for someone who can commit to a full work week for 10 weeks, preferably living during that period within the five boroughs or immediate suburbs (though there could be some flexibility depending upon conditions in the city at that time).

The ideal candidate is a motivated, energetic student of journalism who can work well with others passionate about the power and importance of local news.

    KEY CHARACTERISTICS

    • Strong writing and verbal communication skills
    • A nose for news
    • A willingness to listen and learn — and to share what you know

    PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

    • Current enrollment in undergraduate journalism/writing program with work for college news organization and/or other relevant internships/experience

    or

    • Current enrollment in graduate journalism program

THE CITY is committed to diversity and especially encourages members of underrepresented communities to apply. We offer equal opportunity employment regardless of race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability status, age, marital status, or protected veteran status.
