The Atlantic has, for more than 160 years, advanced ideas that matter and sparked global conversation on the most important issues of our time. We aim to bring clarity and original thinking to questions of consequence, on topics ranging from politics, the economy, and global affairs to technology, science, and culture. As the third-longest-running magazine in America, we find ourselves at a remarkable moment: one of both continuation and transformation, of upholding our legacy while continuously reinventing ourselves for the future.

The Atlantic is seeking a staff writer focused on technology. This writer will cover  misinformation, disinformation, emerging technology, and the far-reaching influence that technology has on what we know, what we believe, and how we live. The ideal candidate for this position will be a well-sourced, fast-paced journalist with analytic flair and a magazine sensibility: someone adept at navigating the strangest corners of the web while also telling the broad story of how platforms, devices, and powerful companies shape (and misshape) reality.

Candidates should have an urgent interest in technology’s implication in social fractures and ideological divides, along with a driving curiosity about new ways people might come to understand the world and each other. This writer will balance a mix of quick-turn and longer-term pieces. Candidates must be eager to publish several times a month.

    You must have:

    • 3+ years reporting on Technology or related fields.

    • Impeccable journalistic judgment.

    • Established sourcing relevant to the role, or a demonstrated ability to quickly develop it.

    • A passion for ideas, with excellent narrative writing skills, and a strong understanding of what distinguishes The Atlantic’s journalism.

    • Exceptional independence and time management.

    • A desire to drive the national conversation about technology

    • A team-player mentality

This position is full time. Our offices are located in Washington, D.C. and New York City, and we are open to remote candidates.

The Atlantic Monthly Group LLC and its affiliates ("The Atlantic") are Equal Opportunity Employers. We do not discriminate against our applicants because of race, color, religion, sex (including gender identity, sexual orientation, and pregnancy), national origin, age, disability, veteran status, genetic information, or any other status protected by applicable law.
