The Atlantic has, for more than 160 years, advanced ideas that matter and sparked global conversation on the most important issues of our time. We aim to bring clarity and original thinking to questions of consequence, on topics ranging from politics, the economy, and global affairs to technology, science, and culture. As the third-longest-running magazine in America, we find ourselves at a remarkable moment: one of both continuation and transformation, of upholding our legacy while continuously reinventing ourselves for the future.

The Atlantic is seeking a Senior Editor to help expand our coverage of technology. The editor will focus on the extraordinary extent to which rapidly changing technology is shaping the future of how people think and what they believe, as well as the social, cultural, and political implications of these changes. This person will balance a range of assignments, from news hits to major features, that tell the story of how platforms, devices, emerging technology, and cryptocurrency—along with powerful companies and individuals—are both expanding and fragmenting people’s understanding of reality.

The ideal candidate will be an exceptional leader, capable of guiding staff reporters and outside contributors in turning distinct ideas into polished, definitive stories. This person should have an authoritative understanding of the field, a desire to experiment, as well as a talent for drawing out bold analyses, arguments, and compelling narratives. Communication, cooperation, and a sense of curiosity and wonder are essential. This person must be energized by the demands of a digital publishing pace.

Other qualifications of the ideal candidate include:

    • 5+ years of experience, preferably editing stories relevant to this role.
    • Excellence at all levels of editing, including assigning, story structure, line edits, and headlines.
    • A demonstrated ability to manage compassionately and effectively.
    • Exceptional time management and the ability to oversee many varied projects at once.
    • A sense of gameness, and an openness to a variety of views on the ways in which different technologies are shaping our species and the larger world.
    • A commitment to all dimensions of diversity, and a demonstrated record of being a force for inclusion in the workplace.
    • A magazine sensibility, with a passion for ideas and a strong understanding of what distinguishes The Atlantic’s journalism.

This position is full time. Our offices are located in Washington, D.C. and New York City, and we are open to remote candidates.

The Atlantic Monthly Group LLC and its affiliates ("The Atlantic") are Equal Opportunity Employers. We do not discriminate against our applicants because of race, color, religion, sex (including gender identity, sexual orientation, and pregnancy), national origin, age, disability, veteran status, genetic information, or any other status protected by applicable law.
