We are looking for an experienced research reporter to help us uncover documents, data and sources for hard-hitting investigative projects. You’ll team up with reporters and editors to do the kind of deep digging required to put out rigorous, powerful investigations.

Research reporters work as part of a highly collaborative team that partners with ProPublica reporters and editors and with the engagement, news applications, data, visuals and audience teams, as well as with other publishing partners, to cover a range of topics.

As a research reporter, you’ll investigate people, companies and government agencies, curate original datasets and analyze the results, like we did with “Operation Fox Hunt: How China Exports Repression Using a Network of Spies Hidden in Plain Sight” and the “Secret IRS Files” series. The research reporter’s keen attention to detail and creativity lead them to information that others may have missed, as well as recognizing when all viable avenues have been exhausted. The position requires patience, flexibility, doggedness and sound news judgment.

    Relevant skills:

    • Demonstrated ability searching legal resources such as PACER, Courtlink, Westlaw or local court systems.
    • Demonstrated ability using aggregated public records such as Nexis, TLO, Accurint and Pipl and news sources such as Factiva, Bloomberg and Newsbank.
    • Facility searching social media.
    • Expertise in identifying, obtaining, searching and deciphering public records.
    • Strong understanding of government documents, agencies and processes at the federal and local levels.
    • Ability to file targeted FOI requests.
    • Keen attention to detail and an ability to connect the dots in investigations.
    • Tech savvy, including being comfortable with the Microsoft Office suite and the Google suite of applications.
    • Excellent organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Excellent communication skills and ability to synthesize information for others.
    • Ability to prioritize and work collaboratively in a dynamic, multiproject team environment.

This job is full time and includes benefits. The position will be based in our New York office, but we’re open to remote work.

If all of this sounds exciting to you, you can apply using this form. We will begin reviewing applications as we receive them, but we will continue to consider candidates as long as the posting remains live on our site.

We know there are great candidates who may not fit into what we’ve described above or who have important skills we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.

We will begin reviewing applications as we receive them, but we will continue to consider candidates as long as the posting remains live on our site.
