New Hampshire Public Radio (NHPR) is seeking an innovative and thoughtful reporter to join our newsroom and cover the impacts, causes and responses to climate change in New Hampshire. This reporter will help shape the editorial direction of our climate change reporting project, By Degrees, and act as lead reporter, producing regular news stories and creative features on topics that will range widely — from politics to environmental racism, the energy industry, education, and tourism, to name a few. This beat is a chance to cover one of the most significant issues affecting people around the world with a focus on a small, dynamic state where the audience is hungry for stories and ideas, and the policy direction is still very much in flux. We have a strong emphasis on equity in our climate reporting, and keep an eye towards solutions. We provide editorial guidance and support for enterprise reporting, and we have a robust community engagement team that will deepen your work. There are also opportunities to collaborate and have your work heard outside of the state, through our strong connections with the New England News Collaborative, NPR and NHPR’s podcast Outside/In. This position is based in New Hampshire and reports to our Managing Editor. Much of our staff works part of the time remotely and we expect that to continue. The individual filling this role will be required to travel throughout the state as needed and participate in onsite events in Concord.

Our ideal candidate will have a background in broadcast, print or digital journalism and will be ready to jump on breaking news, but we’re also looking for someone with a passion for creative storytelling and exploring unexpected stories that touch the public and make an impact. Collaboration is also key to how we work, and we’re looking for someone who loves teaming up with others. NHPR is committed to mentoring our journalists, including candidates from untraditional professional backgrounds, and helping them develop as journalists and leaders. NHPR has policies regarding fair compensation and a generous benefits package that includes three weeks paid vacation time to start and  twelve paid holidays, as well as paid sick and parental leave.

With mountains, lakes and beaches, New Hampshire has rich recreational opportunities, and easy access to destinations in New England and Canada. New Hampshire Public Radio is an independent and trusted source for news and information, and the state’s largest radio news service. NHPR’s newsroom, digital team, podcasts and original programs consistently earn national recognition for their in-depth reporting and production. NHPR is the winner of the 2015, 2017 and 2018 National Edward R. Murrow Award for overall excellence.

    Responsibilities include:

    • Gather, write and produce news reports for on-air broadcast and digital distribution.
    • Use initiative and source development for both daily news and enterprise reporting.
    • Stay up to date on national and regional news related to energy, the environment and climate change.
    • Produce multi-part series and digital products, with a focus on journalism and storytelling that engages a new, diverse audience.
    • Work varied shifts to meet news coverage demands, including breaking news and other appropriate coverage reasons.
    • Engage with communities around the state, in person and online, to deepen understanding of the beat and build a bigger audience for the work.
    • Utilize social media, such as Facebook, Twitter and others, to disseminate news to the NHPR audience.
    • Participate in station fundraising, live appearances and sponsorship activities.
    • Seek professional development opportunities, with support of managers, and take initiative to learn new skills in reporting, on-air presentation and digital news production.

    Qualifications:

We believe a strong newsroom includes journalists from a range of backgrounds, with different skills, experiences and passions.
